Hair, hair, hair!

by DiahnneSeptember 5, 2017no comment

With my confidence riding high on the success of the Garmadon and Lloyd customizations, I decided to start work on the Ninjago elemental masters minifigures. The first thing I did was to identify all their body colors and hairpieces from screenshots of the show and start collecting them from Bricklink. I managed to identify all the hairpieces, but some of them were not available in the right color at the time. So I began another painting/color matching adventure and these are the results.

Elemental Master Hairpieces

I started this project in the autumn of 2016 and then in the spring of 2017 LEGO came out with minifigures of Skylor and Ash. I thought my colors were pretty good, but when the official minifigures came out Skylor’s hair was bright red, not dark red, and Ash’s hair was sand blue, not gray. This summer Lego also put out a new caveman minifigure with a brown hairpiece. I had used the black version for Bolobo and painted it brown. I guess I’m just a few months ahead of my time.

Ash and Skylor Hairpiece Comparison

I think the red for Skylor’s hairpiece is pretty bright. On the cartoon it never looked that bright to me. Skylor was already available as a minifigure, but with a hood, not hair. With my painted hairpiece, she looked just I wanted her to, and was my first complete elemental master. I did buy the official minifigure as soon as it was released. On that figure Skylor is wearing her outfit from a later season (Sky Pirates), so she looks a little different than my version. Here is a comparison with mine on the left and the official version on the right. My red paint color is the same as the arms of the other figure.
